Dorothy Leurs
Dorothy Leurs was awarded a scroll at the 2001 RSCDS AGM, nominated by Edinburgh Branch. Here is the citation which accompanied the presentation.
Over many years Dorothy has been much in demand as a teacher to weekend and day schools in the UK and overseas. She has been a regular teacher at Summer School for some 25 years. For the last 10 years she has been leading and teaching groups of dancers on activity holidays at home and abroad.
Dorothy held office at Branch level for 10 years and has been a member of the Society's Executive Council as well as standing Committees. Additionally, Dorothy was a member of the Edinburgh Branch demonstration team for over 10 years and during that time took part in several performances at Holyrood Palace. She was involved in training the large group of dancers appearing at the closing ceremony at the Commonwealth Games in 1970. She has always had a particular interest in teaching and encouraging young people, for many years preparing teams of children for festival competitions.
She took on the organisation and management of the dancing in Princes Street Gardens in collaboration with the local authority and when the council ceased promoting the event Dorothy took the initiative to ensure the continuation of this popular public attraction. After playing the leading role for over 25 years, she has now handed over to a managing committee.
