Marianne Taylor

Marianne began dancing in 1952 under the instruction of Jeannie RB Carmichael who had founded the Boston Branch.

In 1954 when the first Scottish Country Dancing weekend was held at Pinewoods Camp, Marianne taught some classes along with Jeannie Carmichael and Mary Isdale MacNab.

Marianne received her teaching certificate in 1957 from Miss Milligan.  In 1958,when Jeannie Carmichael moved to New Jersey, Marianne was appointed by Jeannie as the “head teacher” of the Boston Branch. She held that position for a few years and then asked the Board to take on the responsibility of planning class schedules.  Since 1966, Marianne’s other activities have included teaching at many dance weekends and dance camps in the USA, Canada, Australia, Japan and Newfoundland.

For many years, Marianne produced a Burns Night Concert for the Boston Branch, often starring Jean Redpath or Alastair Fraser.  Marianne has continued to teach and play the piano for SCD events. In September 2003, she chaired the committee which hosted the AGM of the Teachers Association of Canada.

Marianne is one of those unique individuals who is always ready to take on any task which is asked of her.  Her spirit and commitment are extraordinary and she is a pleasure to be around.  When asked about being nominated, Marianne replied “What I remember best are the wonderful people who have been my teachers, my students – and my friends! – through all these years. Thank you for making my life so incredibly rich”.
