Kathleen McAdam
Kathleen McAdam has been a driving force
for Scottish Country Dancing in the San Francisco Bay Area for almost fifty
years. A founding Branch Member, she
still continues to serve on the Branch Committee in varying capacities. Her enthusiastic efforts have furthered
Scottish Country Dancing in the Bay Area and throughout California.
As one of the first certificated teachers in the San Francisco Branch, she established the Branch Teachers’ Committee. She helped coordinate the first annual Branch Weekend Workshop at Asilomar and has served as M.C. and beloved Ceilidh Mistress at this event for many years. In 1967, Kathleen and her husband organised the first Valentine’s Ball, still an annual Branch event. Furthermore, she started a dance club in Sacramento, which later became a Branch in 1981.
More recently, Kathleen co-founded the Youth Program in the Bay Area, becoming the Branch Youth Coordinator in 1999. She started local Children’s Classes and now works with several youth teachers who collectively teach almost two hundred young dancers. At the same time, Kathleen founded the Annual Children’s Ball. Attended by almost one hundred youth dancers, the Ball truly showcases the future of the Society.
Kathleen is a passionate ambassador for the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society and for Scottish culture in general. It is fitting to recognise her efforts and accomplishments with the Society Scroll of Honour.
