May Macfarlane
May was first introduced to Scottish Country dancing at school and Girl Guides in Perth, Scotland. She emigrated to Canada in 1952 with her husband and son. Seventeen years later, she discovered that Scottish Country Dancing classes were held in Toronto.
She obtained her Preliminary Test certificate in 1983 and obtained her Full Teachers Certificate in 1985. She started the Tayside Dancers Social Group in 1983 which is still very active. She also has a Tuesday morning class for seniors. In preparation for this submission, dancers from May’s classes were asked for testimonials about her teaching. Over forty testimonials were received. Without exception, they praised her friendliness, patience, tolerance, and teaching skills. Her love of the dance and her skill to instill this in others comes through again and again.
May formed the Tayside Dancers SCD Demonstration Team. Over the years they have entertained at Senior’s Residences, Burns Suppers, Shopping Malls, churches, and Harbourfront’s Celtic Ceilidh.
One of only three women to Chair the Toronto Branch since it was founded 50 years ago, exhibited strong leadership skills during her tenure as Chair. (1997-1999).
May organized the first and, to this date, the only Toronto Scottish Country Dance Music Workshop. It was designed for musicians interested in playing Scottish Country Dance music and was held on Saturday November 13, 1999. 22 musicians participated.
May’s love of the dance has been well demonstrated in the many dances she has devised over the years. The dance “Bea’s Delight” was published in RSCDS Book 43. As well she has published three books of dances.
