Margaret "Peggy" Spouse
Better known to all as "Peggy", Margaret Spouse is a founder member of the Duns & District Branch and served on the Branch committee on 5 different occasions between 1953 and 1985. After gaining her Teacher's Certificate in 1954 she taught classes in Chirnside and in Duns until 1989.
For several years too, she taught dancing to handicapped children every week and a Women's Rural Institute group.
Peggy played a major part in the Duns &District May Weekend School and was a longstanding member of the Duns 'Reivers Week' Committee, training the demonstration team, and giving preparatory lessons for the Reivers Ball, and for Hunt Balls. As well as Day Schools in Galashiels, Forres, and Richmond, she also taught at the Summer School in St Andrews during the 1980s.
Since 1981 Peggy has adjudicated at the annual Dance Festival organised by Scottish Borders Council, and more recently, she has conducted In-Service Courses for Primary Teachers.
Peggy has a great knowledge of Scottish history, tradition and language, and willingly shares any interesting information about a dance, the devisor, the music or whatever. After 50 years she is still organising 2 dances where very often her instructions are sung to the tune and rhythm of the dance!
Peggy takes a close interest in the life of the Branch, and in the wider work of the Society. She has been, and continues to be, a source of inspiration to many people within the Branch, in the town of Duns and beyond.
