Johan MacLean
A long-standing and loyal member of the RSCDS, Johan has dedicated her talents and skills to the teaching and development of Scottish Country Dancing.
As a lecturer in physical education at Jordanhill College, Johan’s interest inspired her students. She has been much in demand as a teacher at weekend and day schools, in Australia, Canada and USA as well as the UK. She is also an examiner and adjudicator, setting both the candidates and herself the highest standard of practice.
In Glasgow Branch, Johan has always been a much respected teacher. In 1990, Glasgow’s year as City of Culture, Johan assisted in organising a day of dance, which 3,500 children attended, with 900 performing the Dashing White Sergeant. Johan shared responsibility for a video presentation, ‘Take Your Partner’ at Jordanhill College which won an award, and also for the video presentation in the Society’s Dance Scottish Schools Pack.
Johan served as Director of Summer School for four years, having previously been on the teaching staff. She brought her own style to the running of the school, and was a gracious hostess to many guests.
Johan currently sits on the Education & Training Committee, where her experience and background in education have contributed to planning the content of the new teaching qualification.
All those who know Johan are well aware of her love of Celtic culture, and have been delighted by her beautiful singing of Gaelic songs. Her talents and warm personality have touched many, from the Highlands and Islands of her homeland, to city dwellers throughout the world. For her dedication and commitment, and for her outstanding service to the Society, Johan MacLean is a worthy recipient of this honour.
