Dance Scottish Week 2007 - in perspective

Looking back on Dance Scottish Week (DSW) can be done by using both text and images. Below we will try to capture some of the memories of DSW by using both. If any branch has any photographs (text welcome too) of the events that they held during the week they will be gratefully received and used to commemorate this original event. Thank you.

Overview

by Liz Fraser - Marketing Director

After the anticipation of a new event in the dancing calendar and a great deal of effort by many people, Dance Scottish Week has now come and gone.

From what started out as the seed of an idea at the Scottish Conference in Dunblane in 2005, Dance Scottish Week materialised into a series of SCD events that took place this September 2007.

The concept of Scottish Dance Week was supported by The Scottish Government with good wishes received from First Minister Alex Salmond and Deputy First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon. Minister for Europe, External Affairs and Culture, Linda Fabiani said; “The Scottish Government is delighted to endorse Dance Scottish Week in its aim to highlight and promote Scottish Country Dancing to a wider public. It’s important that this aspect of our culture and heritage is accessible and appealing to all ages and to people from all backgrounds. And, as we’ve seen from the events so far this week, Scottish Country Dancing is something that anyone can take part in and enjoy.”

From the opening ball in Edinburgh to the closing dance in Glasgow, a host of successful activities took place throughout Scotland, the UK and overseas.

Dance Scottish Week was intended to open doors to the outside world. In particular it was a platform for branches to showcase what they did and to use the opportunity to encourage new dancers.

In addition to dances and ceilidhs, many branches held workshops, demonstrations, beginners’ classes and taster sessions to encourage people to try Scottish Country Dance. Many first timers were surprised just how quickly they got into the swing of things!

Timed to coincide with the start of the winter season, the events were thoroughly enjoyed by those who took part. There were lots of varied highlights throughout the Week and many happy, and indeed, moving moments.

A number of stories have been posted on the website but we would hope more of you will be happy to share news about your experiences during Dance Scottish Week. Please send your contributions to the web editor ....  website.editor@rscds.org
