Young Dancer Project Ends - New Interim Youth Services Committee Print

Inverglen Scottish Dancers

The Young Dancer Project started on 15 March 2010. This was a Scottish Arts Council (now Creative Scotland) part-funded project, to support Scottish Branches in engaging children and young people with SCD and share learning across the organisation. The project was part of a wider RSCDS strategy to recruit more young dancers through Scottish schools, with broader links to health, exercise and reducing obesity.

Following interviews with representatives of various Scottish Branches, a logical framework and strategy was developed, indicating the key activities which would take place during the project. If you would like to read this logical framework, you can download it here.

Creative Scotland agreed to continue funding the Young Dancer project for a further year and the project finally ended in March 2012. You can read the many guidelines and other information produced during the course of the project under 'young dancer project guidelines'.  An Interim Youth Services Committee was established to continue the work of the project.

Interim Youth Services Committee Print

The Youth Services Committee (YSC) will be appointed formally at the AGM in November 2012. In the meantime, the Interim Youth Services Committee (IYSC) would like to ensure that Branches share information about their activities and share information about “what works” in engaging young people with SCD.

Your help really is needed. Please tell us how you engage young dancers, and share your useful teaching tips, information on “what works” or indeed, “what you should never do”!  You can contact the Committee on This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Members of the IYSC are Roy Bain (Convenor), Deb Lees, Jim Stott, Philippa Revill, Fiona McIver, Adam Brady, Louise MacDougall and Anne McArthur.

Strategy for Branches Print

The Young Dancer project supported several Scottish Branches to get more SCD activities off the ground in the Branch area. As part of this support, a Branch Strategy was produced. The idea was that Branches would use the strategy to decide which activities are feasible for a Branch to undertake, depending on each Branch's possibilities and on the area in which the Branch operates.

Active Schools Print

One way to get more children dancing is to approach those responsible for children’s physical education and ask for their input and advice on promoting and organising SCD activities in and outside of schools. In Scotland, there are 680 Active Schools Coordinators (they are like physical education/activities coordinators), responsible for getting children active in schools across Scotland.
