Group profile
Founded in 1977, the Strachur SCD Club celebrated 40 years dancing at its Annual Dance in October 2017. The Club meets every Thursday evening Autumn to Spring. Founder member, Betty Shipley, now 85 and an Honorary Member of the Club, still presides over proceedings, compiling the Thursday evening programmes and the Annual Dance programme, keeping records of dance lists and accompanying music, advising and calling dances.
In addition to Club evenings, Strachur Club takes part in the South Argyll Branch events such as their Annual Spring Dance and summer dancing evenings, and invites Blairmore group to their end-of-session dance to which Blairmore reciprocates with an invitation to their Christmas Dance. Members sometimes attend other Dances in Argyll – Helensburgh or Tarbert for example – so there is plenty of happy interchange between Argyll groups. Some Club members attend the Branch classes in Dunoon – indeed, Betty Shipley taught the Beginners class in Dunoon for several years before retiring from that post in 2018.
