Youth Director - Jayne Brown

The RSCDS Youth Director is Jayne Brown

Jayne Brown (web)Coming from South West Scotland (Dumfries) I started Scottish country dancing in primary school. Later I did some Highland dancing, but for me it definitely has to be SCD for social enjoyment!

I am a member of the Castle Douglas branch and a RSCDS qualified teacher. Through my local council I teach adult beginners ceilidh and social dancing, giving me an opportunity to promote RSCDS Dance Scottish.  I also taught a local advanced adult class.

For the last 15 years I have led a children’s class as an after-school activity at a local primary school.

My three year RSCDS appointment as Youth Director started November 2006.

My role as Youth Director is to:

1.      consider all matters relating to youth, ranging from 5 to 35 years

2.      give advice and support to branches on matters concerning childrens’ classes, resources available, recorded music, advertising and legal requirements, including child protection under Protection of Children Scotland Act

3.      provide information via a newsletter, networking and the website

4.      attend children days and other youth dance events

5.      appoint assessors for Medal Tests for Young Dancers

6.      be involved in training for those teaching children and young adults

7.      meet with young dancers

8.      oversee the running of events such as Spring Fling

9.      liase with other Scottish dancing groups

10.  report and speak on youth matters at Education and Training committee meetings.

Working in partnership with youth groups and teachers I hope to extend the tradition of Scottish country dancing, enabling all to keep fit whilst enjoying the fun that this very social activity brings.
